It’s easy to love those who are similar; who have the same interests, cultural background, sexual orientation, political views, religious beliefs and so on. In other words, it’s easy to love our friends. But what about those who are different than us, or even our enemies? Corrie ten Boom, a Christian who helped many Jews escape the Nazi Holocaust during World War II and was imprisoned for it, tells in her book Tramp for the Lord of a time after the war when she was approached by one of the cruelest guards in the prison camp. At first she found it hard to forgive him. She wrote, “For a long moment we grasped each other’s hands… I had never known God’s love so intensely as I did then.” When asked which is the greatest commandment in the Law, “Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” – Mark 12:30-31
