Shakes are usually thicker than smoothies, and smoothies are usually thicker than juices. It has to do to the base* or method used in producing the drink. This recipe is for a thick, avocado-base, green shake!
Ingredients:
- 2 large kale or romaine lettuce leaves, stems and center veins removed
- 1 avocado
- 1 celery stock
- 1/2 pineapple, rind and core removed
- 1/4 cup filtered water
- 4 ice cubes
Directions:
- In a high powered blender, blend all the ingredients on a low speed then high for 1 minute or until creamy smooth. If necessary, adjust the amount of water — depending on the type of blender used or when incorporating one of the variations listed below.
- Pour into a tall 16oz glass, add a straw, and serve!
Variations:
- Replace the pineapple with 2 pears or 2 apples.
- Leave out the avocado to turn your thick green shake into a green smoothy.
- Replace the avocado with a banana for added flavor.
- For an extra creamy texture replace the water with coconut milk, or add 1/2 cup cashews, soaked in filtered water for 20 minutes then drained.
Yield:
Makes one 16oz serving, or two 8oz servings.
*Shakes, Smoothies, and Juices are similar yet different. All three are often made with fruits or vegetables or a combination of the two. Shakes are usually blended with a base of milk, ice cream, or yogurt, be it dairy or plant-based. If you’re vegan, avoid the diary options. As for smoothies, they use water or juice and ice as its base. And Juices are made with a juice extractor which doesn’t require a base.
