Happiness relies on good circumstances and ceases to exist when things don’t go our way. Joy, on the other hand, is a gift from God that gives hope that leads to strength, making it possible to have joy in both pleasant and difficult times. Not that experiencing sorrow is wrong; sometimes it’s there to indicate that we need to change our ways. Sometimes it’s due to regret, fear, failure, or getting stuck in a pattern of discontentment. But gladness comes when we remember who Christ is, what He did for us, and what He promises to do. “But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who long for your saving help always say, ‘The Lord is Great!” – Psalm 40:16
